INTERVIEW WITH KAREN ANGLE Never has “TNA” had such a dual meaning. Total Nonstop Wrestling signed Karen Angle, the sexy real-life wife of wrestling star and Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle, to a lucrative contract in 2007. On a weekly basis, fans watch this leggy brunette manipulate her husband’s opponents, fight with referees and B*tch-slap fellow ring sirens. We pinned down this sultry mother of two and queried her about her husband’s possible defection to MMA, couch-wrestling with Kurt, and accessorizing with Olympic gold medals.
RF: How did you land a recurring role in TNA?
Karen: They had a storyline going about how mean and abusive Kurt was, so they asked me and [my 5 year old daughter] Kyra to do a few episodes. It went so well they signed me to a contract.
RF: The blogs describe you as a "manipulative vamp." Comments?
Karen: My character is a bad girl who is willing to do anything to make sure her husband wins. I try to convince people to cheat for him or I jump on the ring and get in the referee's face to distract him so Kurt can do his dirty work.
RF: There is also speculation that you're not really Kurt's wife?
Karen: I know! Attention bloggers: We've been married almost 10 years. But it's actually a great compliment that they think I'm an actress. I had never done any acting before this, just some modeling.
RF: Any truth to the rumors that Kurt might consider MMA?
Karen: Kurt has met with multiple companies, but when it comes to putting the money on paper, they have not yet been able to follow through.
RF: Do you think his neck problems inhibit him from being a contender?
Karen: I don't feel the injury is an issue, because when he goes out there, he won't even feel it. I have seen Kurt train and there is such an intensity about him and a passion about what he does, when he sets his mind to something he'll do it successfully. He would not walk into the MMA world if he didn't believe he could be number one.
RF: So he might start training for MMA?
Karen: Who says he isn't training right now? [laughs]
RF: How would Kurt do in a fight?
Karen: Kurt could kick any one of the MMA guys' asses! And I am not being sarcastic when I say that. When he sets his mind to something he is not going to settle for less than being number one. He can't. He doesn't function that way.
RF: Does Kurt ever let you wear his Olympic gold medal?
Karen: No! I have never worn his medal. I am going to have to talk to him about that when I get off this call.
RF: Does he ever try to put you in a chokehold?
Karen: Oh yeah! All of a sudden he'll just take me down. I'll be walking through the room and he'll come diving off the couch and take me down. He thinks he's funny, and I'm like "Dang it! I am trying to take care of the kids and the house!"
RF: Do you think singlets are sexy?
Only when the straps are down!
