Will WWE Be Firing Wrestlers As Part Of Budget Cuts?

By Daniel Pena

Investors cheered quarterly results Thursday WWE that exceeded expectations and announced it would cut seven percent of its workforce as part of a push to increase profitability.

The job reductions would affect approximately 53 of the 762 positions the company said it had in February. This means a sizable number of office employees will be laid off. Since WWE performers are considered independent contractors, they are not part of that group of employees. So does this mean, no wrestlers are getting fired?

No.

While it's currently unknown whether WWE will be cutting ties with main roster "Superstars" like they did in June, developmental wrestlers were told Wednesday to expect cuts soon as part of the company's downsizing.

Tonight's WWE NXT tapings at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida, should offer a clue as to who may be getting canned. Those jobbing on television or not appearing at all would be most susceptible, especially if they've been under been contract for awhile.

Since last year with the opening of the WWE Performance Center, the company has continuously added to its developmental roster with little in the way of cuts. Now it's time for heads to roll.
