With their promotion to the main roster this week on SmackDown LIVE, Billie Kay and Peyton Royce will no longer be known as The Iconic Duo. As seen on the TitanTron during their ring entrance, Kay and Royce’s team name is now The IIconics (this is also how WWE.com is referring to the tandem).
It appears that WWE changed their team name due to trademark issues. The US Trademark and Patent Office site shows that the name “Iconic Duo” is registered to Iconic Duo LLC, a company that has the mark registered for clothing including athletic footwear, headwear, hats, t-shirts and more.
The trademark was filed on June 9, 2017. The company then filed for opposition on Tuesday, which is the same day Kay and Royce debuted on Smackdown LIVE, attacking Charlotte Flair.
Due to the nature of the trademark’s intended goods and services, WWE likely would not be able to produce merchandise for Royce and Kay under that name. As such, they are now known as The IIconics.
This situation is somewhat similar to WWE changing Ruby Riot’s name to Ruby Riott. The spelling of her name was changed after her WWE TV debut due to a trademark issue with a fictional band in an ongoing book series.
