Lex Luger

Lex Luger was “The Total Package,” a buff 6-foot-4, 275-pound wrestling superstar who could dominate in the ring in every way possible. Now in 2019, he can barely walk and weighs as much as a cruiserweight wrestler.

While on a cross-country flight from Atlanta, Georgia to San Francisco, California on October 19, 2007, Luger got struck with a severe spinal injury as a result of 30 years of football and wrestling. He remained a complete quadriplegic for more than two months, without as much as bladder or bowel control when he got transferred from Stanford University Hospital in Stanford, California to Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

“I was one of the strongest guys on the planet,” Luger said a few months after his life-changing experience. “I was freaky strong before. I was bench-pressing 450 pounds my senior year of high school. I was a freak. Now I can’t lift a one-pound dumbbell.

“But God tells me that mind, body and spirit and what we are as a man is measured not by our physical strength, but our inner strength.”

Fortunately for Lex, his health improved enough for him to get released from the Shepherd Center in March 2008. He remains wheelchair-bound 11 years later but is able to stand on his own for brief periods and walk with the aid of a walker.

Now 61 years old, Luger looks radically different after the spinal infarction robbed him of his amazing physique. Check out 10 photos of the two-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion in 2019.
