Backstage News On Rey Mysterio’s WWE Status – Has He Signed A Contract?

Rey Mysterio

Rey Mysterio’s entry in the 2018 Men’s Royal Rumble Match was a surprise that no one expected. Apparently, WWE was so tight-lipped on the matter that not too many in the company knew about Mysterio returning. But don’t get too attached to him, because Sunday may have been just a one-time deal.

Both F4WOnline.com and PWInsider.com report that Mysterio’s night at the Rumble was only put together over the last week. With the idea looking to be impromptu, that made it easier for WWE to keep his entry a secret. As of today, he has not signed a contract with WWE.

On the post-Royal Rumble edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said that while the appearance could lead to more dates, Mysterio does not want to work a full-time schedule. Both sides have had talks over the past year, but the hold-up with Mysterio joining WWE is that management wants him working a full-time schedule.

According to PWInsider, WWE officials were impressed with the loud reaction to Mysterio’s appearance.

Mysterio is currently a free agent as he is not under contract to Lucha Underground or any other promotion. He recently had talks with Impact Wrestling, through friend Konnan, about joining the company and was very close to striking a deal. Travel arrangements were made for Mysterio to appear at the most recent set of television tapings earlier, but a deal could not be reached. Impact Wrestling officials wanted him to make his in-ring debut at the April 22 Redemption pay-per-view.

Mysterio entered the Royal Rumble Match at No. 27, eliminating NXT Superstar Adam Cole before later being eliminated by Finn Balor. In this video below, Mysterio reflects on the warm welcome he received from fans after making his surprise return.
